Night Vision goggles is the ultimate gadget that allows you to see in the dark. They are mostly used by the military and the police for their operations. However, you can still purchase them for your own personal use. Of course, most commercial models aren’t the same grade as those used by the military but it should be sufficient.
You can find all types of night vision goggles and equipment on the market. Everything from binoculars to thermal cameras is available to the general public to security, hunting as well as wildlife observation purposes as well. The heart of any night vision goggles is the light intensifier tube which allows targets to become visible at night.
There are basically five different generations of night vision technology, that comprises of generations zero through four, where each generation incorporates updates making the technology more effective. Night vision technology was originally developed during World War II. The United States and German armies both developed devices that enabled them to continue combat after dark. Before this, night time maneuvers were extremely dangerous. The technology designed by the United States is known as Generation 0 known as Gen 0. These were “active” devices that required the use of a large infrared illuminator to capture a usable image. The United States also used Gen 0 devices during the Korean War. Night vision goggles came into more widespread use during the Vietnam war with the creation of Starlight technology, or Gen 1 night vision. These units were “passive,” and functioned by gathering only the ambient light available. Moonlight was needed to get a usable image and they amplified the light by about 1000x. 2nd gen increased light amplification to around 20,000 x increased performance with more effective optics, resolution and intensifier tubes. Many of the latest goggles, binoculars and monoculars come with included infrared illuminators that dramatically increase their performance in total darkness.
The first time that most people became aware of what night vision goggles and other night vision pieces of equipment were was during the first Gulf War in 1991. Many people quite clearly remember seeing pictures beamed into their homes showing sites as attacks took place in the dead of night and everything could be clearly seen as if it was daytime.
Most of the night vision goggles available today work in one of 2 ways. They either enhance the image that the person is seeing or they detect heat to produce a thermal image. Whilst there are even some more advanced versions of these goggles which now utilize both types of image enhancement to provide the wearer with a much clearer image and so their perception of what they see in front of them is much improved as well. Today even the most standard pair of goggles will enable the wearer to see someone or something that is over 250 feet away when it is completely dark.
Although most NVG’s are used by either the military or law enforcement agencies today, you can still purchase a pair for your own personal use. However it is important to note that the ones that are for sale to the general public are not of the same specification you would see being used by either the military or law enforcement agencies.
The great thing about night vision goggles are the versatility it gives you, not only physical use, meaning being able to wear them as opposed to having to hold them. It also gives you different uses other than home security. Off the top of my head, having a pair of low-cost Night Vision Goggles, would give you an advantage if you were to go hunting. It would let you star gaze much clearer, it would let you see what really goes on with those back yard critters or let you see what was really going on any where light was unavailable.
In the past, because the military were the only people using night vision goggles, it made them impossible for a civilian to get a hold of. Well, thanks to retailers you can now get Cheap Night Vision Goggles at a price that you can afford. And really, what is your safety and sanity worth? I am sure it is worth much more than the cost of a pair of night vision goggles. Not only can you purchase night vision goggles, but you can also get binoculars and night vision thermal cameras as well and all of these can now be readily brought by members of the general public either through a specialist retail store or online.
Certainly if you are looking for a very basic and affordable pair of NVG’s then it may be worth your while considering purchasing a pair of Gen 1. But with all of these types of goggles you will find that the main feature of them all is the light intensifier tube(s) which then allows a target to be seen by the person wearing them when it is dark.
Although panoramic night vision goggles are extremely effective as they are at present, the manufacturers of these particular goggles are always looking for ways to upgrade and enhance them further. At some stage they hope to produce a pair which also includes sensor fusion technology. This kind of technology will use both night vision and image intensifying technology along with an infrared sensor technology as well. Such goggles will be commonly referred to as “Enhanced Night Vision Goggles” or ENVG’s and there are some that are already using such technology in theirs. In fact ITT Industries have partnered up with Raytheon in order to develop such goggles.
